About Us

The name of the congregation comes from a village mentioned in the gospel of Luke, chapter 24.

On the day Jesus was reported to have risen from the dead, two followers walking from Jerusalem to Emmaus were met by Jesus, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him.  As they walked along he "interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures."  (Luke 24:27, NRSV)

Upon reaching their destination, the followers invited the stranger to stay with them.  When he blessed and broke the bread, the two recognized him to be Jesus, who then vanished from their sight.  In joy they retured to Jerusalem to share "what had happend on the road, and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread." (Luke 24:35, NRSV)
